The Best Pants for Working Outdoors: Trousers that Keep Workers Safe

Posted by Xamax on 20/09/17 13:35

Most on-site workers consider Hi-Vis vests, hard hats, safety glasses, earplugs, and safety harnesses as PPE that keeps everyone safe, but many do not consider that what you put on the bottom has an effect too. It’s common to walk by construction sites in the summer and see workers wearing shorts and hi-vis vests with no t-shirt, but is that safe? Some sites have issued citations for those who work with hot tar wearing shorts on site who have sustained burns since appropriate PPE dictates that workers must wear whatever protects them from hazards on site.

Whilst technically the use of short trousers or long pants should be determined by your site’s health and safety policy, there are many benefits to wearing longer pants, such as protecting skin from UV rays, all the way to preventing cuts and burns or deep cuts that can get easily infected. Just that little bit of extra protection can really make all the difference. Pants are the way to go on site, so what are the best pants for working outdoors? Here’s a look at trousers that keep workers safe.

Cargo Trousers

Quality cargo trousers are usually made of strong fabrics with reinforced pockets and belt loops for storage. For those on site who work with, say, wood, you can easily store pencils, tape measures, and basic tools in cargo pockets. Many offer additional knee reinforcement for longer wear as well.

Work Coveralls

For those who work in airplane hangars, in a mechanic shop, in a factory, as a fighter pilot, or a lab, work coveralls protect your entire body from harm. To get you through the year you’ll need a lighter pair of coveralls for summer, and a padded pair for winter; some coveralls are designed for warmth, others breathability, and others for protection so you’ll have to determine what works best for your industry.
